What is Glutathione?

Glutathione(GSH) is a peptide, a very small protein that occurs naturally in the body. GSH is the body’s master antioxidant. We are all born with an adequate supply of GSH, but unfortunately the levels of naturally occurring GSH decreases as we age. Diminished GSH can lead to a number of ailments that can be prevented or delayed, as you will discover below.

How does GSH work?

GSH has three components L-glutamate, glycine with the most important being L-cysteine. Cysteine is an important cell nutrient that is rare in food. Cysteine as a single amino acid cannot be ingested alone and is toxic in the blood, but it is non-toxic in cells when it is present as a larger protein. The safest way to supply cysteine to cells is under the form of Cystine (an amino acid formed by two cysteine molecules attached by a disulfyde bridge). When cysteine enters the cell it can manufacture and elevate glutathione or GSH.
