Olympics 2008 and Mental Preparation

Olympics 2008 preparation is now at an end, and in less than two weeks the Beijing games begin. One of the most stressful parts of an athlete’s career is training to qualify for the Olympic games, it is like trying to make it into law or medical school. But the memories are much better.

For my fans I have included this video, which has my 4x100m team winning the Olympic Silver Medal. I am in the second video, in lane 6, and the camera focuses on me at the start. Wow what an amazing memory, even now. I hope you all enjoy it.

It takes years of preparation, discipline and focus, and only a very select few make the standards to qualify.

Many have tried, I recall the men’s Canadian hockey team trying to gain a spot to go to the 2006 Olympics.

It was the dismayed look on Wayne Gretzy’s face that said it all, even with millions of dollars, the Olympic Games is the high point in an athlete’s life.

You have now made it to the games, congratulations.

The real work is just about to begin. Once you arrive at the Olympics and for those attending these 2008 Olympics the pressure has just began. From the moment you enter the Olympic village, all the physical preparation is over, and only mental preparation can help to improve your chances of making it into the finals.

Making it to the finals will be an an amazing accomplishment, but winning a medal will be the crown jewels of your athletic career.

Mental preparation for the Beijing Olympics 2008 games is essential, because the distractions in the village are numerous. Live entertainment, dance clubs, movies, sightseeing, special events are all a part of the host nations gifts to the athletes.

During the Los Angeles, 84 Olympics I remember eating in one of the many athletes dining areas, and as I looked up I saw Lionel Richie walk by on his way to perform for us athletes.

I jumped up, and ran out to take a photo with him. There are many such encounters, so an athlete has to remain focused.

In addition to the events occurring in the village, an athlete often sees their completion for several days, or weeks before they compete.

Famous Olympic athletes are everywhere, everyone wants to get their autograph, and you will soon have to compete against them and that can be a very intimidating and stressful feeling.

Athletes attending the Olympics can turn to hypnosis, affirmations, imagery and visualization to help decrease the stress of the situation, and to perform at their best.
