5 ways hypnosis or self hypnosis can help with Dysmenorrhea (severe menstrual pain)

Maybe you are wondering if there is an alternative to medication, and if self hypnosis can help with Dysmenorrhea? Are you sick of having severe menstrual pain, and having to take medication every single month?

Yes hypnosis can help with Dysmenorrhea. I have presented a step by step process for you to follow to manage the pain of severe menstrual cycles.

I have been suffering from severe menstrual pain, since my early teens.

As an Olympic athlete, I couldn’t allow the pain to stand in my way of competitions, so like most teenagers; I reached for medication to stop the suffering.

Menstrual cycles are a natural process, even though some companies are now thinking of coming out with products that allow you to never menstruate again. I know that will be great news for some women.

However, for now going through the monthly ritual is more or less event less for many women, but for those suffering from Dysmenorrhea; it is anything but event less.

Here is some insight into girls and women that suffer with Dysmenorrhea. Hypnosis and self hypnosis is intended to help those women that suffer from primary dysmenorrhea, where there are no structural abnormalities.

If you are suffering from secondary dysmenorrhea, and have some structural concerns like endometriosis, then consult your primary health care provider.

5 ways self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea

• As an alternative to medication
• Providing a sense of control
• Ability to resume everyday activities
• Increased relaxation
• Altered perception of reality

Hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea in the following 5 ways:

First, self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea by giving you an alternative to medication. I used to take medication throughout my entire cycle, now I only use the natural supplement Black Cohosh about 5 days before the start of my cycle. Of course you should determine what works best for you.

If you are new to hypnosis, this is the answer to the question What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, where positive suggestion can change behaviour, and which the individual experiences as being different from normal alertness.

For some of the most frequently asked questions regarding hypnosis see my FrequentlyAskedHypnosisQuestions page:

Second, self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea by giving you a sense of control. When you identify exactly where in your body you feel pain, then you can begin to manage it. It may be best to make of list. For example, do you have severe pain in your abdomen or in your back, maybe in both places? Pain is specific to you and by making this list you will know what to focus on during self hypnosis.

Third, self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea by allowing you to resume your normal activities in your day.

I used to feel bad from the moment I thought my cycle was starting to the end of the entire cycle.

Now, I only experience discomfort on the first day of heavy flow, and only for a few hours.

By following these instructions on how to do self hypnosis, it is my hope that it will allow you to get back to your normal routine.

Fourth, self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea when you give yourself positive suggestions to remove the pain, which enhances relaxation.

Enhanced relaxation has been associated with the release of endorphins, which is the body’s natural pain reliever.

For instance, in your mind you can imagine the areas of pain as black, and surrounded by light that gets brighter, and brighter, until the pain disappears.

Be creative, but make sure the suggestions are positive because the unconscious does not understand negative suggestions.

For example, if I say “do not think of a blue tree.” What just happened? Studies show that you will think of a blue tree. The unconscious heard that sentence as “I must think of a blue tree”, because it was unable to register the negative “not”.

For greater understanding of how to give instructions to your unconscious, which is the part of you that controls the awareness of pain, see my unconscious mind page.

Finally, self hypnosis can help with dysmenorrhea by allowing you to re-examine your perceptions. There is a saying that “Your perceptions are your reality”. In the case of menstrual pain “What you feel is real”. My reality used to be that during my cycle the feeling of severe pain was overwhelming and impossible to handle.

Today my reality has changed. During my cycle, I only experience discomfort for a few hours on one day.

And for some periods, I have no discomfort at all.

I have been using self hypnosis to manage my menstrual cycle for over a year and a half now, and in that time I have not used medication once.

It is my hope that your perception of menstrual pain will also change. Hypnosis is a window into the subconscious, and a great opportunity to discover parts of yourself that you never imagined existed.
