Who invented soccer ?

Who invented soccer? Well that is a very good question. When I was playing football as a young English school girl, (long before I became an Olympic sprinter ) I thought we English invented it. England I thought was the centre of the world and that we invented everything.

The English had the first and the oldest tournament called the FA Cup , as I remember it , or the Football Association Cup that took place in 1872.

George Best

In addition, we had the best football teams on the planet and my favorite team was Manchester United the team that the great Georgie Best belonged to. He was a winger, and I played the wing position on my team. He was very fast and had great acceleration. I was fast with great acceleration. He was a sprinter. I was a sprinter. I loved to watch him out run defenders, and score great goals.

He was one of the first famous football players that showed the world how important speed was in the game of football. Today, I teach soccer speed training that will give you the winning edge. You can click here for more details.

Soccer or Football?

It was only when I came to Canada did I realize that football was called soccer in North America. I was confused for a very long time. So if we are talking about football, then I still think that the game was invented in England.

However, since the only part of the world that calls football soccer is North America, then that question is likely coming from a North American. Therefore a Canadian or someone from the United States of America is curious about its origins, and wants to know who invented soccer.

The beginning of football

As it turns out I was correct in my youthful musings about the origins of soccer as it began in England in the 1800’s. When I played soccer in England, I often thought I was in a rugby game, since the opposing team used to come after my shins to cut me off.

Soccer was a game of survival of the fittest, and in my case the fastest. In this anything goes game, the rules were often ignored, even when the whistle was blowing.

My best friend (she was taller and bigger) was on the lookout for the worst offenders and the entire game looked like a rugby game as the players ended up in a heap on top of the ball.

It is interesting that both soccer and rugby had been under the same Football Association around 1868 when rugby split during a dispute regarding the rules of the game and in particular shin-kicking and carrying the ball.

With the supporters of rugby now gone to develop their own sport, the four remaining soccer Associations in the United Kingdom codified their rules and formed the International Football Association Board ( IFAB) in 1882. For additional information about IFAB please click here.

The present laws of the game as the rules are called are based on previous rules codified in 1938, and were revised in 1997. For an in depth history of who invented soccer please click here.
